In common with the other Livery Companies, The Fishmongers' Company spends a large proportion of its resources in education and charity. Under the Will of Sir John Gresham the Fishmongers were left funds for the administration of the school he had founded in 1555 at Holt in Norfolk. Greshams' School, as it is now called, is still supported to a large extent by the Fishmongers' Company, members of which also represent more than half of its governing body. The Company also maintains almshouses and pensions for its poorer members, provides exhibitions and scholarships to a number of Colleges and Schools, and administers a variety of charitable trusts. In 1970, with the support of other Livery Companies and charitable organisations, the Company was instrumental in setting up a new Charitable Company, known as the City and Guilds of London Art School Limited, to administer the City and Guilds of London Art School.

In another direction the Company has close links with the London Division of the Royal Naval Reserve, the Fishery Protection Squadron and the Parachute Regiment. Each year a Trophy, presented by the Company, is awarded to a member of the Parachute Regiment for the outstanding achievement of the year.
